The bench here is a rare bench designed by kho liang ie for artifort during the 60s. These benches were specifically commissioned for the dutch department store “bijenkorf” in the 60s. Therefore, they were only sold in the netherlands in small volumes and nowadays a rarity to find. As far as can be traced back, the bench has been delivered in 4 different variants. A short bench and a longer bench as well as 2 different frame styles. The bench in question is the long variant, supporting 3 seating places, and has a short curve at the backside. In any case, the bench supports a cast iron frame and solid wooden slats, placed horizontally on the frame and painted black. The model looks like a crossover between the c683 sofa and the 024 lounge chairs/sofa, both also designed by kho liang ie. In fact, the slats bear a striking similarity with the 024, although the slats on a 024 are actually placed vertically. The hand of kho liang is very much visible in this design too. The overall result is a typical example of dutch design; sober, minimalist, well-proportioned and build solid. The bench can be equipped with upholstered cushions to provide for more comfort. With cushions, the bench could be easily used indoor as well. Please ask us about the possibilities. The bench is in good vintage condition with some patina on the wood visible.
