The bakelite, invented in 1909 by the belgian-american chemist leo baekeland, was the first synthetic plastic. In the first half of the 20th century, all households were full of objects made of bakelite. It was used to make boxes for radios and telephones, as well as various kitchen utensils, jewellery and toys.
