View of the terrace- original signed-numbered lithograph - andre cottavoz-12/125. 50x39 cm. Born in 1922 in saint-marcellin, isère, andré cottavoz studied at the école des beaux-arts in lyon in 1939. In 1942, cottavoz at the age of 20, he was part of class 22 and had to go to the compulsory labour service. The sto earned him a deportation to austria with his comrade philibert charrin. Despite harsh living conditions, they managed to paint on pieces of cardboard and even to exhibit but the paintings were destroyed. Released and his studies completed, he participated, from 1945, in several exhibitions. In 1953, he won the fénéon prize. Meanwhile, an important movement was born: the nouvelle figuration de l'école de lyon, or sanzisme. Jean fusaro, andré lauran, jacques truphémus and paul philibert-charrin joined andré cottavoz in expressing its tendencies, namely the search for a light less natural than gushing from the very interior of the canvas, an intention that for his part cottavoz supports by the thickness of the "sensual paste that he accumulates in pastel and chalky tones [...] being thus figurative in the sense that it starts from reality, abstract in the sense that it reduces it to its essence"4: to paint, for andré cottavoz, is truly to sculpt his canvases (where monochrome is not uncommon) with a trowel, hence the nickname that may have been given to him of "green monticelli"5. In vallauris, where he settled permanently in 1962, andré cottavoz became interested in glazed ceramics, which he worked with roger collet6. André cottavoz's works are in many museums in france and abroad, and multiple exhibitions of his works were organized in france and abroad from 1946.
