Rare flat desk with solid mahogany processing and tracked mahogany veneer, assigned to Canabas. Joseph Gengenbach called Canabas (1715-1797), cabinetmaker received master on 1 April 1766. It opens with two drawers in a belt, locking (2 keys), and rests on four feet cut-out sheaths, finished with gilded bronze clogs and wheels. The tray opens in the middle in two sections mounted on gilded bronze compasses, which unfold and allow to transform this office into a square table: dining table or breakfast table, for six to eight guests. Paris, late 18th century. The fashion of these combination furniture, or transformations, has spread in the last decades of the 18th century, ensuring the success of cabinetmakers like Canabas, whose desk table is reminiscent of certain achievements, both by the quality of mahogany used, only by the sobriety of its design and the care given to the different assemblages. It is an elegant and functional piece of furniture, of great sobriety, made in a tracked mahogany of a remarkable color, which unfolds in large solid surfaces. A mechanical table of Canabas, preserved at the Jacquemart André Museum, has something in common with our office table, both in its form and in its operation. We also know of canabas dining tables, larger dimensions, whose tray can be deployed according to a system similar to that of our office table (Sotheby's Paris, April 14, 2010, lot 181)
