In 1921, bernard-albin gras designed a series of lamps for offices and industrial environments. The gras lamp, as it will be called later, amazes with its simple, robust and yet very ergonomic design. There are no screws or welded joints in the basic shape. In 1927, the ravel company bought the patent and launched the production of gras lamps. Bernard-albin gras was one of the most innovative designers of the twentieth century. The functional aesthetics of his lamps and especially the design of details such as those of the arms, rods, supports and bases were truly original and far ahead of its time. Early on, le corbusier was seduced by the modern design and user-friendliness of the lamps and became one of bernard-albin gras's most enthusiastic supporters, using the lamps in his own offices and employing them in numerous architectural projects around the world. Others like robert mallet-stevens, jacques emile ruhlmann and eileen gray also followed this trend. In addition, such well-known artists as sonia delaunay and georges braque also used these lamps in their studios. For the first time in history, a lamp was as popular in both professional and residential applications. Bernard-albin gras's talented and visionary design proved timeless. 4 bookends by bernard-albin gras for gras ravel france 1940.
