La viloncelliste- original lithograph signed- frederic menguy. 74x55 cm. Frederick menguy. Born in paris in 1927, his parents being joseph menguy, electrician, and his wife born marguerite petit, frédéric menguy is a student of the college of sarcelles, then the commercial college of goussainville (val-d'oise)1. Very early passionate about drawing and painting, he trained in evening classes in the workshops of the city of paris (place des vosges, then boulevard du montparnasse) while holding a first accounting job in an insurance company (1943-1949), then a second only part-time in a stockbroker (1950-1951)2. More in accordance with his vocation, he entered the école normale d'enseignement du dessin in 1951 to, obtaining the certificate of aptitude for teaching art drawing1, teach drawing in 1953. It was in 1956 that frédéric menguy abandoned the professorship to devote himself totally to his work as a painter, placing himself, like bernard buffet and andré minaux, in this expressionist suite by francis gruber whose dark and miserabilist painting still expresses the pessimism of the post-war period. The year 1957 is that of his first exhibitions3, and personal at the théâtre du tertre of the writer and engraver georges charaire, then in the parisian salons2. In 1958, he married nicole allardin1. The research that follows in frédéric menguy's work brings him closer at first to abstract landscaping and evokes nicolas de stael. His work of lithography began in 1964, before his discovery of the region of the corbières massif in 1966 made him settle the following year in villeneuve-la-rivière where he definitively moved towards the colorful figuration that will characterize him, especially with his cypress landscapes and his dreamlike evocations of femininity, the circus world with its clowns and horse cavalcades.
