Very pretty gargoyle, with harmonious lines and soothing colors. A superb decorative object in good general condition (some small marks on the beak at the top without incidence). See photos. A gargoyle is a terracotta jug that peasants once used to store water, keep it fresh and drink from it. This word comes directly from the provençal "galgouleto" which means "jug". It is an emblematic object of the south of france and especially of spain. It has its origins a long time ago, around 2, 500 bc. This container typical of the mediterranean regions has the specificity of keeping water fresh. Made of a porous material, namely clay, the water moistens the outer surface of the pot, passing through the pores of unz varnished clay. To evaporate, it uses energy and therefore evacuates its own heat, while cooling the inside of the jug. The expression is that the gargoyle "sweats"... By deduction, you guessed it, the gargoyle has varnish only on the upper body and on the beginning of the belly because it facilitates exchanges with the outside. The varnish makes the surfaces waterproof. Sources: www.objetsdhier.com.
