Antique painted wardrobe dating from 1773, from the Schwäbische Alb, southern Germany. The heavily weathered character and original paintings give it an extraordinary appearance. Both the design of the wardrobe and the painting are simple and primitive, but authentic and a typical example of folk art from the region. What makes this piece of furniture truly exceptional is that the base of the wardrobe has remained completely bare and unpainted, while the original decoration in various motifs and shapes has been hand-painted over it. It is also remarkable that this fragile paint can still be admired after 250 years. Some parts of the original painting are worn and faded, but this only adds to the characteristic and authentic appearance of the whole. On the crest, the wedding date 1773 can still be read with some effort. The wardrobe has been thoroughly checked and professionally restored, with attention to originality and character. The construction is solid, the painting is worn but preserved, and the patina has been maintained. The layout is still original, with one shelf and coat hooks. The wardrobe can be locked with the original working lock. Old, sporadically present woodworm traces have been checked and treated. Parts of the crest and plinth have been expertly restored/replaced. The furniture can be transported in two parts and is therefore demountable. Bridal wardrobes like this are rarely encountered. The age, patina, and the way this wardrobe is painted make it an exclusive piece of furniture.
