The work has been attributed to John Greenhill, a painter from Salisbury who worked in London from 1662, successfully dedicating himself to portraiture, receiving commissions notably from actors, playwrights, and men of letters. The painting, which has been restored and re-canvas in the past, is presented in a period frame.
