Located at 218–220 Faubourg Saint-Martin in Paris, the company E. Val & Cie is evolving towards a hybrid model combining trade and the distribution of glassware; from the second half of the 1920s, it directed its offerings towards an Art Deco vocabulary by initiating a collaboration with the Verrerie d'Art Lorrain, a subsidiary of Daum based in Croismare. These productions combine acid-etched coloured glass and architectural forms. They will be signed D'Argyl, a trademark registered in 1928 by E. Val & Cie to distinguish this artistic line. This vase is a characteristic expression: amber tinted blown glass on a foot, with a decoration of roses and foliage acid-etched on a satin background, structured composition in registers — high frieze, central ogival panel, smooth areas at the bottom — which reflects the influence of the Art Deco geometric repertoire on a traditional floral motif. The contrast between the translucent amber and the matte areas of the decoration creates the characteristic depth of Croismare productions, in a style similar to the glassworks of Schneider or Legras. Signed D'Argyl in the decoration. Tiny chips at the base; slight cooking bubbles inherent to the manufacturing process.
