Robert DELVAL - Canvas Laurence. Oil on canvas - Hand-signed - 1997. Robert DELVAL (1934) Young woman seated with a bouquet of flowers, named "Laurence" by the artist. Unique work. Oil painting on canvas. Hand-signed on the canvas. Counter-signed, titled, and dated 1997 on the reverse of the canvas. The work also features a sketch on the back. Dimensions: 54 X 65 X 2 cm. Superb condition. Intense colours. Unique work. Robert Delval was born in Paris, on Rue des Saules. He is a true Montmartrois, whose mother made images d'Epinal. He grew up among pots of paint and naturally began to paint and draw from the age of 6. His artistic education was shaped by street painters in his childhood neighbourhood, books, and museums. In 1947, he began his studies at the Haute École Claude Bernard in Paris. It was during this time that he created his first gouaches. In 1952, he turned towards the Arts-Déco in Paris, where he studied for 3 years. Robert Delval finds his stylistic impulses in Pierre Bonnard and Henri Matisse, but quickly distances himself to harmonise his palette and develop his own sense of space. As if emerging from his childhood, his tonal nuances are both soft and shimmering. His flat areas of colour, although sometimes very bright, are never aggressive. His language is one of emotion.
